The organization we now know as City Life / Vida Urbana sprouted from the seeds of the feminist, civil rights, and anti-war movements of the early 1970s. In honor of our community’s 50th anniversary (and at our Joyful Resistance Jubilee in October), we’ll celebrate our lineage of anti-displacement organizing and our movement of building solidarity within our communities since 1973! / La Organización que ahora conocemos como City Life / Vida Urbana surgió de las semillas de los movimientos feministas, de derechos civiles y contra la guerra de principios de la década de 1970. En honor al 50º aniversario de nuestra comunidad (y en nuestro Jubileo de Resistencia Alegre en octubre), celebraremos nuestro linaje como Organización contra el desplazamiento y nuestro movimiento de construcción de solidaridad dentro de nuestras comunidades desde 1973.

CLVU started as the Jamaica Plain Tenant Action Group (JPTAG), who introduced and led a militant fight against displacement with direct actions, like eviction blockades. The people who started JPTAG were socialist feminists and were inspired to uplift women’s leadership. Meanwhile, other socialists were unionizing at factory jobs in Boston and nationwide. JPTAG wanted to organize around another equally important arena of struggle – the places we call home. Early bi-lingual and working-class members organized communities in this renewed fight for housing as a human right during the height of slumlord abuse and arson (the deliberate burning down of buildings for profit). Although JPTAG was based in Jamaica Plain, its members worked to stop displacement across Boston. JPTAG members never imagined the housing justice movement would be alive and thriving 50 years later. / CLVU tuvo sus orígenes como el Grupo de acción de inquilinos de / the Jamaica Plain  Tenant Action Group (JPTAG), que introdujo y dirigió una lucha militante contra el desplazamiento con acciones directas, como bloqueos de desalojo. Las personas que iniciaron JPTAG eran feministas socialistas inspiradas con la idea de elevar el liderazgo de las mujeres. Mientras tanto, otros socialistas sindicalizaban los empleos en las fábricas en Boston y por todo el país. JPTAG quería organizarse en torno a otra arena de lucha igualmente importante: Los lugares que llamamos nuestros hogares. Los primeros miembros bilingües y de la clase trabajadora organizaron a las comunidades en esta lucha por la vivienda renovada como un derecho humano durante el apogeo del abuso de los residentes de los barrios marginales y de los incendios provocados (la quema deliberada de edificios Con Fines de Lucro). Aunque JPTAG tenía su sede en Jamaica Plain, sus miembros trabajaban para detener los desplazamientos en Boston.  Los miembros de JPTAG nunca se imaginaron que su movimiento por la justicia de la vivienda estaría vivo y prosperando 50 años después.

Members of the JPTAG community also worked together to run the JP/Roxbury Food Co-op along with other co-ops, which brought people together and created a safe haven during the violent era of bussing and segregation in Boston. JPTAG was created alongside a bilingual (English and Spanish) newspaper called CommUNITY News which featured stories that mattered to diverse working-class communities across Boston. / Los miembros de la comunidad JPTAG también trabajaron juntos para dirigir la  Cooperativa de Comida de JP / Roxbury (Food Co-op)  junto con otras cooperativas, lo que unió a las personas y creó un refugio seguro durante la era violenta de los autobuses y de la segregación en Boston. JPTAG fue creado junto con un periódico bilingüe (en inglés y en español) llamado CommUNITY News que presentaba historias que importaban a diversas comunidades de la clase trabajadora en Boston.

Many people of different cultures are affected by displacement and lack of affordable housing, but we’re all united under one movement to fight for racial, social, and economic justice. JP Tenant Action Group – and now as City Life/Vida Urbana– has always been grounded in community– from our birth in the 70s, we’ve hosted cultural events, such as theater shows, and skits, involving all generations and families, from children to elders. We know that building community, within and across different cultures, languages, and ideas, and celebrating joy and our relationships to each other are integral to our movement. / Muchas personas de diversas culturas se ven afectadas por el desplazamiento y por la falta de viviendas asequibles, pero todos estamos unidos bajo un movimiento para luchar por la justicia racial, social y económica. El Grupo de Acción de Inquilinos de JP, ahora City Life / Vida Urbana, siempre se ha enfocado en la comunidad: Desde nuestro nacimiento en los años 70s, hemos organizado eventos culturales, como espectáculos teatrales y representaciones, que involucran a todas las generaciones y familias, desde niños hasta ancianos. Sabemos que construir comunidad, dentro y a través de diversas culturas, idiomas e ideas, y celebrar la alegría y nuestras relaciones entre nosotros son parte integral de nuestro movimiento.

In that spirit, we’ll be celebrating our 50 year anniversary this Fall, and we invite you to our big party, the Joyful Resistance Jubilee, happening October 13th! Our intention is to celebrate our work and reflect on our history, where we are now, and where we’re heading together– with music, food, dancing, and simply enjoying each other’s company.
